What Do You Truly VALUE?

 I think we have lost touch with the word value in our society.  The word value has even crept into the fast food industry-"value menus." Are you really getting a "great value" from that $1 double cheeseburger?

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:
Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.
Money is not "everything", nor is it the "root of all evil."

Money is nothing more than a means of exchange.

However, when we attach TRUE value to that exchange of money for goods, services, etc., it tends to hold more water with us.

Speaking of water, many of us here in northeast Ohio experienced damaging storms which for some of us resulted in flooding in basements (and not always "clean water" if you catch my drift) and loss of contents (things we value-and yes, they can be replaced). With these storms have come many ideas and ways to combat future storms that could potentially lead to REPEAT occurrences. In other words, these ideas/concepts are ways to PREVENT future LOSS of material items we value OR even more so, the loss of OUR HOMES THEMSELVES!

Projects like these cost money. However, the protection of our families and our belongings outweighs the COST/EXPENSE of the projects. The story of The Three Little Pigs comes to mind when I think of these projects. Who is huffing and puffing and trying to knock "your house" (your body) down?!!?

There are many other things we could spend our money on that would bring us more joy, but in this case, these projects are not an expense, but an INVESTMENT.  All too often, we confuse expense with investment! We also need to see the VALUE in the project to understand that in the long run it is an investment. Affordability should not be confused with NECESSITY. Can you AFFORD to keep things the way they are and run the risk of MORE problems (which generally means MORE COST) down the road?!!?

We should look at our HEALTH as an INVESTMENT as well, especially when considering the Dalai Lama quote listed above. The old idea of "Whoever has the most toys in the end, WINS" should be THROWN OUT. It should be changed to utilize the Dalai Lama quote and say "Whoever has the most JOYS IN LIFE, WINS." Take that for what you will, because for each individual, JOY can be something altogether different from person to person.

If having tons of "toys" gives you JOY, then GREAT! If having a family to come home to each night to give love and receive love gives you JOY, GREAT as well! But none of these matter if you do not have your HEALTH. If you have toys like a motorcycle, a sports car, a speedboat or jet ski, etc., but your health is so poor that you can't use them-WHAT DO YOU TRULY HAVE?!?! If you have a wonderful loving family, but your health is so poor that you cannot be with them and do fun things with them-WHAT DO YOU TRULY HAVE?!?!

Consider what you have today and what you value and what you have lost and want to regain that you value and start LIVING LIFE again!

You Won, Dad

After completing the Cleveland Half Marathon this weekend, my 6 year old son, Brayden said to me, "Dad, you won, you got a medal."

My first thought was, "Oh buddy, Daddy wasn't even CLOSE to winning!"

Then it dawned on me. I just ran 13.1 miles. I have completed TWO full marathons previously.

Brayden is right. I did win. As does anyone that sets a goal, plans the action steps to meet their goal, and then COMPLETES their goal.

Sometimes, we make life OVERLY complicated. Sometimes it takes a 6 year old to put it back into perspective.

It's the KISS method. Keep It Super Simple OR (if you want to look at differently) Keep It Simple Stupid. :)

That's what Brayden reminded me on Sunday. Keep it simple, Dad. You WON.

Go out and win today!

Float YOUR Boat

We have heard the phrase "Whatever floats your boat" at one time or another.  What I translate that to is DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY. Seriously, do we do things that make us happy?!?  I hope you are.  If you are NOT, WHY aren't you?!?!

If you are not doing things that make you happy, then you must only be doing things that make you sad, angry, spiteful, etc.......is this you?!?  STOP IT!

Some people (well, more like MOST people) HATE their jobs. They get up every morning and shuffle to the bathroom-moaning and groaning and already in a MISERABLE mood before they have even begun their day.  Then when they leave for work, they are even MORE miserable dealing with traffic or weather or BOTH and by the time they get to where they are going they have built up SO much negativity that the rest of the day will pretty much follow suit and be MISERABLE and NEGATIVE.

Sounds like a great way to go through life, right?!? STOP IT!

Even if you DISLIKE (I don't want to use the word HATE, it's used WAY TOO OFTEN) your job, the fact is, YOU HAVE ONE (that's a bonus!). What if you did not have a job? How happy would you be then?

We always have choices in life. Some people say "I have no choice." That's not true.  We always have choices.  You can choose NOT to go to work today.....it is your choice-however, you then have to live with the repercussion LATER of not getting a paycheck AND POSSIBLY not having a job to go back to at all-BUT IT IS YOUR CHOICE.

I love what I do. I truly do. I think I was born to serve others-and CHIROPRACTIC is the opportunity I was given to serve others.  It is unfortunate that so many live in misery and pain and dysfunction not knowing that CHIROPRACTIC could benefit them.

So the fact that I love my profession (it's not really WORK when you love doing it) makes me happy. There are some bad times (we all have them-hey, just wait ten minutes CHICKEN LITTLE, I guarantee it won't be as bad as it seemed), but there are MANY GREAT TIMES, too!  With those great times in the office, I ALSO make sure I have great times AT HOME, too!!

This weekend we will be taking our boys to the Cleveland Cavaliers' basketball game (and I just found out it is SUPER HERO NIGHT on top of it!!). Nicole and I are so excited to take the boys to the game. Earlier this week, we spent some time with family playing TABOO. We just had a TON of fun laughing and playing the game--oh, and the GUYS team SWEPT the girls that night, also!!!

My homework for you today after you read this:  figure out what makes you happy and make sure you do it more often--GO FLOAT YOUR BOAT!

What Is the Equation for SUCCESS and HAPPINESS?

I came across a formula the other day:
Take the alphabet A-Z and assign the corresponding numbers 1-26 for each letter so A=1 and Z=26.

We hear all the time of what it takes to make our lives 100% SUCCESSFUL.  Is it HARD WORK? Is it LEADERSHIP? Is it LUCK?  Is it LOVE?  Is it "(CASH) MONEY?" (That last one is for my three-year-old Blake-whenever he receives money, he yells, "CASH MONEY!").  We can thank his Uncle Bryan for that one.

Well, let's put this formula to the test:
HARDWORK= H+A+R+D+W+O+R+K= 8+1+18+4+23+15+11+11= 98%
Close, but not quite 100%.
KNOWLEDGE=11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5= 96%
Again, good but not 100%.
So far, we know hard work and knowledge are pretty important when it comes to being successful in life, but they still don't equal 100%......hmmmm, is it LEADERSHIP then? No, it equates to 92%!
Money only equals out to 72%-which happens to be the same percentage for the word FAILURE
I like this because when people usually associate the word FAILURE, it is in a negative context.  How many times did Michael Jordan miss an attempt at a game-winning shot? Let's just say it is WAY MORE than the times he actually MADE game-winners.
**I know, Cavs' fans, we remember Craig Ehlo and "THE SHOT" however.**
Thomas Edison was said to have failed 10,000 times.  As he put it, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

The list goes on from Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, to even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.  All people who at one time had next to nothing or were told they were "FAILURES", yet no one reading this today would consider uttering the word "failure" in the same breath with those individuals!
So what word using this equation is the key to 100% success in life?

The word is ATTITUDE.
A=1,T=20(x2), I=9, T=20, U=21, D=4, E=5 (1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5)= 100%!
How is YOUR ATTITUDE?! Do you constantly blame others for your lack of happiness or success? Are you always NEGATIVE?!?!
-OR-

Are you grateful for what you have?!? Do you thank those that have helped you along your way? Think about your ATTITUDE today and how it may be affecting your ability to SUCCEED and BE HAPPY in LIFE!
This "game" we call LIFE really is SIMPLE when we think about it.

Celebrate LIFE! Celebrate HEALTH! Whatever You Do, JUST CELEBRATE!

Today is Wednesday. March 19th. 2014. There will be only one day like this. TODAY.

Whatever you choose to do, or choose NOT to do, you will never be able to have another day like TODAY.

In today's fast paced world, it is east to get caught up in the "rat race" and forget about all the wonderful great things that are directly in front of us. We use phrases like:

"I will celebrate IF (insert event here)."

OR IN OTHER WORDS-we put it off or blow it off.

Celebrate TODAY. Look around at the wonderful things you have and be grateful for them! Because tomorrow, they could disappear.

Our health is a big one-we take it for granted sometimes UNTIL it leaves us and we become ill or bedridden, or even worse, when we die.

As Dr. Wayne Dyer professes, "Don't die with your music still inside you."

Live LIFE that way it was intended to be lived-HEALTHY, HAPPY, and FULL OF LOVE AND PASSION!

If you are reading this-today is not over! Make today the best March 19, 2014 it can be!

Do what is necessary to bring joy in your life and CELEBRATE TODAY!

Do what is necessary today so that God willing, you can do it all again TOMORROW!

What are you waiting for?!?!?

What Makes a Family?

Families come in all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. I bring this up because when I think of our patients-we treat them like we would treat a family member. Our mother, father, spouse, sibling, child-and we want THE VERY BEST FOR THEM.

Most patients initially come to our office IN PAIN. They are hurting. They are suffering-their QUALITY OF LIFE is DIMINISHED.

This is what drives us to provide the highest quality of service to our patient family. We want to see everyone GET BACK to doing what THEY LOVE.

A quote I like to use in the office is:

WE ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS; WE ARE HUMAN DOINGS!

So let's get back to DOing what makes us happy! If something is keeping you from doing what you LOVE (remember: DO WHAT YOU LOVE and LOVE WHAT YOU DO!), and you want to get your LIFE BACK-our team at HealthSource of Norton would love the opportunity to see how we could help you achieve the quality of living you deserve!

The definition of INSANITY is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Let's break that cycle!

There is never a charge to SPEAK with me. If in our consultation, we (you and I) determine this is something you would like to pursue, we can arrange a time for an examination and any necessary x-rays to get to the root of your problem and discuss how we can help!

Call us at 330-825-3221 for more information. Do it today. It's never too late (or TOO EARLY!) to make a CHANGE!

Dr. Brian Miles

Pinch Me, I Must Be Dreaming

We have all heard that saying in one form or another.

When you think of our dreams or our life goals, how do you VISUALIZE them? Are they more of wishes or hopes-OR-do you have steps in place to GET to where you want to be??!?!

I was sound asleep the other night and I woke up in the middle of what felt like a good dream (I cannot remember the specifics of the dream itself, but I awoke in such a GOOD MOOD-it was a perfect way to start the day.).

It got me thinking...... If we are in the middle of a GOOD DREAM, shouldn't we SEE IT THROUGH?!?!

If you were dreaming of pitching a perfect game, shouldn't you see it through until the 27th out is recorded (how many no hitters/perfect games have been lost after the FIRST 26 OUTS were recorded?!?! Quite a few. We need to see our dreams/visions/goals THROUGH TO COMPLETION.

If you have already visualized meeting your goals, they will be much easier to achieve because you have already seen them through IN YOUR MIND!

It is a great first step to getting where you want to be....
